Back to the future at 80s day on Mt Buller ski resort

Welcome to Eighties Day on Mt Buller ski resort. It’s like being trapped in a time warp.

The fashion includes figure-hugging outfits for men, big hair, and the bands that ruled the soundwaves had names like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and Devo?
And yes, if you have watched John Cusack’s film Hot Tub Time Machine, a time when Michael Jackson was black.

The Ice Bar at the Mt Buller Chalet is pumping with people dressed in fluoro bodysuits.
Eighties Day,  is a chance for everyone to unwind and say goodbye to the slopes for yet another year.

It’s fun with a capital F.

During the day, runs such as Wenzel Weave are packed with skiers who have matched brightly coloured headbands with cat’s-eye mirror glasses.
By 3pm, everyone has made their way down the slopes to the Ice Bar, where the real party begins.
While the slopes are important, all skiers know the apres ski offering is often what makes a ski holiday. And if this is any indication of how Mt Buller parties, it must be a fun mountain.
Luckily for us, it was an easy walk back across the slope to the Breathtaker All Suite Hotel.
Mt Buller has more beds than any other Victorian ski field. Options range from the Mt Buller YHA Lodge to self-catering apartments.
The boutique Breathtaker has ski-in ski-out access and locals say it is the best hotel on the mountain. There’s excellent storage for skis and a cosy split-level restaurant and the rooms. While perhaps a little dated, the rooms are clean and comfortable.
We had driven to Mt Buller along the Maroondah Highway through Yarra Glen to Yea. At Mansfield, we stopped to collect our snow chains before the final 20-minute trip to the Mt Buller Resort entry gates. Entry costs $35 for day visitors.

Fresh snow

The roads are sealed, not too steep, and there are safety rails. Mt Buller has 15cm of fresh snow on the ground on Tuesday this week (June 18).

General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts, Laurie Blampied, welcomed the snowfalls. “We received some great snow falls overnight and given the forecast over the next few days, we also expect to produce a significant amount of man-made snow. With these conditions we anticipate having more lifts open by the weekend and we will keep our guests informed of any developments,” Blampied said.Bourke St, Mt Stirling in background - Source Andrew Railton 18_6_2013

Marketing and Communications Manager for Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, Amber Gardner, said: “Winter has definitely arrived here at Mt Buller, and the fresh snow has transformed the resort into a winter wonderland this morning. There’s a great atmosphere around the mountain as everyone celebrates the arrival of the first major snowfall of the season.

“The resort is looking incredible, and with school holidays just around the corner it is a great time to book in a snow trip, with deals on offer to suit all tastes and budgets. We are certainly feeling on top of the world here at Mt Buller!”

For those who don’t ski, or who just want to try something different, give the Snowshoe Guru, Grant Houniet, a call. Houniet’s walking tours of the mountain go places you can’t access on skis or a board. You don’t have to be super-fit, but you are walking up a mountain in thin air, so expect a fairly good aerobic workout.

The tours range from a 90-minute village view walk to an all-day trek to the top of neighbouring Mt Stirling.
